Amago no Yado: Omotenashi in the Mountains

Located 10 minutes by car up a mountain road from central Katsuyama, and surrounded by the thick, green forests of Mt. Echizenkabuto and the surrounding mountains, Amago no Yado (“Amago Trout Inn”) is a modest hotel for both small and large groups.

Here, “amago” or amago trout, are raised on site for use in meals served to day visitors and overnight guests alike.

Upon arrival, visitors are greeted by the sound of rushing water.  Just across the large gravel parking lot, several small breeding ponds can be found cascading down a gentle slope.

Inside, visitors can dine on the first and second floors.  The first floor can host up to around 100 people.  And for an additional 2000 yen, visitors can enjoy one of several small, tatami-floored private rooms on the second floor.   A full course of local traditional dishes, presented with seasonal touches and locally grown vegetables.  The highlight of course is the freshly prepared river fish; savory charcoal-grilled, crunchy tempura-style, and presented with a tangy mustard sauce, trout sashimi, a wonderful delicacy for river fish.

By the end of the meal, the table will be a sea of plates, pretty vessels that remind diners of the numerous fish fare and all the flavors they enjoyed.  Satisfied, visitors can now continue to enjoy their adventures in Katsuyama City.
